A new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act came into effect in Canada on June 28th. With this new Act, some common terms related to visiting and/or studying in Canada have changed. We have developed a short glossary below to help you understand the new names.
permit holders refers to those persons who have been issued Minister's Permits
renew, renewal Previously referred to as "extend" or "extension", as in an application to extend a permit or visa. This "extension" is now referred to as a "renewal" of a permit or visa.
study permit Previously known as a Student Authorization, or Student Visa. Required by most foreign students who are planning to study in Canada for longer than 6 months.
temporary resident visa Previously known as a Visitor's Visa. The Temporary Resident Visa is required by citizens of certain countries to enter Canada to visit, study or work temporarily in Canada. work permit Previously known as an Employment Permit or Employment Visa. Required in most cases in order to work temporarily in Canada.
