| A new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act came
into effect in Canada on June 28th. With this new Act, some
common terms related to visiting and/or studying in Canada have
changed. We have developed a short glossary below to help you
understand the new names. |
| permit holders |
refers to those persons who have been issued Minister's
Permits |
| renew, renewal |
Previously referred to as "extend" or
"extension", as in an application to extend a permit
or visa. This "extension" is now referred to as a
"renewal" of a permit or visa. |
| study permit |
Previously known as a Student Authorization, or
Student Visa. Required by most foreign students who are planning
to study in Canada for longer than 6 months. |
| temporary resident visa |
Previously known as a Visitor's Visa. The Temporary
Resident Visa is required by citizens of certain countries to
enter Canada to visit, study or work temporarily in Canada.
